Why an integration layer
Industrial Data, Without the Silos
Plants grow one project at a time, and every pair of systems that needs to share data gets its own custom link. DataHub gives those systems one place to connect.
Fewer custom links to build, secure and maintain
One place to configure, monitor and troubleshoot data flows
Add a system by connecting it to DataHub and choosing where its data goes
Protect sensitive OT networks and data by removing direct access from business and cloud systems
10 separate links in this example. Each one is built, secured and maintained on its own, and a new system usually means several more.

OPC UA Client/Server
Industrial & OPC · OPC Client/Server
Connect to OPC UA servers as a client, and expose data as an OPC UA server.
What DataHub supports
DataHub connects to OPC UA servers as a client, reading values and writing back where configured. It also exposes its aggregated data as an OPC UA server, so OPC UA clients can consume data that originally came from OPC DA, Modbus TCP, MQTT, databases and other sources.
Common applications
SCADA systems, historians, MES and analytics platforms that support OPC UA.
Bridge OPC Classic DA data across machines and eliminate DCOM issues.
What DataHub supports
DataHub connects to OPC DA servers locally and moves that data to remote machines through its own tunneling, so DCOM between machines isn't needed. It also acts as an OPC DA server itself.
Common applications
Legacy SCADA, DCS and HMI systems that use OPC Classic Data Access.
Relay OPC A&E alarm and event data across network zones.
What DataHub supports
DataHub acts as an OPC Alarms & Events client and server. A&E data can be tunneled securely through proxies and DMZs, or converted to OPC DA or OPC UA.
Common applications
Alarm management, event logging, centralized alarm displays, converting between OPC Classic A&E and OPC UA A&C, and converting OPC A&E alarms into a flat OPC DA or OPC UA hierarchy.
Convert OPC DA to OPC UA (and vice versa) without replacing hardware.
What DataHub supports
DataHub provides bidirectional conversion between OPC Classic and OPC UA. Legacy servers keep running while OPC UA clients read their data through DataHub.
Common applications
Modernizing DCS and PLC integrations without hardware replacement. Connecting OPC UA SCADA to legacy OPC DA servers.
Bridge OPC data between servers, PLCs, databases, files, and MQTT.
What DataHub supports
DataHub bridging copies selected data points from one source to another, between any supported source and destination pair: OPC server to OPC server, OPC to a database, file, MQTT topic, or another DataHub instance.
Common applications
Cross-system data distribution, multi-site aggregation, historian pre-processing.
Combine data from OPC, MQTT, Modbus, Excel, and more into one dataset.
What DataHub supports
DataHub reads from several kinds of sources at once (OPC UA, OPC DA, MQTT, Modbus TCP, Excel and DDE) and brings them into one unified data set. Once a point is in DataHub, any configured feature or destination can use it.
Common applications
Unified Namespace architectures, multi-source dashboards, normalizing data before analytics.
Read Modbus TCP devices and make their registers available as OPC or MQTT data.
What DataHub supports
DataHub connects to Modbus TCP devices as a client and reads configured registers, with writes where configured. The data joins DataHub's unified data set for OPC, MQTT, logging, bridging or tunneling.
Common applications
Energy meters, drives, sensors and building controllers that support Modbus TCP.
Publish and subscribe to MQTT brokers with configurable topics and Sparkplug support.
What DataHub supports
DataHub's MQTT client publishes selected data to, and subscribes from, compatible MQTT brokers. It can also push to Azure IoT Hub, Amazon IoT Core, Amazon Kinesis and Google IoT. Sparkplug is supported, with Sparkplug V3 and MQTT v5 added in V11.
Common applications
Cloud IoT platforms, edge brokers and IIoT analytics pipelines.
Publish industrial data using the Sparkplug payload specification.
What DataHub supports
DataHub supports the Eclipse Sparkplug specification for structured MQTT payloads, which carry metadata, quality and timestamps in a standard format suited to Unified Namespace designs.
An MQTT broker built into DataHub, with Sparkplug support.
What DataHub supports
DataHub's Smart MQTT Broker runs inside DataHub, so MQTT clients can connect directly without a separate broker. MQTT data lands in DataHub's data set alongside OPC and other sources.
Common applications
Edge deployments, on-premises IIoT hubs, sites where a separate broker isn't wanted.
Send industrial data to Azure IoT Hub and Azure Event Hubs.
What DataHub supports
DataHub's MQTT client connects to Azure IoT Hub so plant data can feed Azure analytics. From V11, DataHub can also write to and receive from Azure Event Hubs.
Common applications
Azure analytics, digital twins and Power BI dashboards.
Log industrial data to SQL Server, Oracle, MySQL and other ODBC databases.
What DataHub supports
DataHub logs selected data points to SQL Server, SQL Express, Oracle, MySQL and other ODBC databases, and can read database values back into DataHub. Store and forward is included with database logging: if the database is unavailable, DataHub caches records locally and sends them when the connection returns.
Common applications
Production tracking, energy monitoring, quality logging, SPC data collection.
Receive streaming data from Kafka and Azure Event Hubs, or write to them (V11+).
What DataHub supports
From V11, DataHub's Event Streams feature receives streaming data from Apache Kafka and Azure Event Hubs, and DataHub can also write to both as external historians.
Common applications
Feeding enterprise streaming platforms and data lakes with plant data.
Move data between networks over encrypted, authenticated DataHub tunnels, without DCOM.
What DataHub supports
DataHub tunnels mirror data between DataHub instances over SSL/TLS-encrypted, password-protected connections. Endpoints can be read-only or read-write, network breaks are detected quickly and recovered automatically, and connections are proxy and DMZ friendly. Architectures can be designed so one side has no open inbound ports.
Common applications
Remote plant monitoring, OT-to-IT data delivery, multi-site aggregation.
Deploy DataHub in a DMZ to relay data between OT and IT zones.
What DataHub supports
DataHub instances can sit in the OT network and in a DMZ. The DMZ instance relays data to IT systems, so there is no direct network path from IT to OT, supporting defense-in-depth designs.
One-direction tunnels in software, plus support for hardware data diodes (V11+).
What DataHub supports
Data Diode Mode makes a DataHub tunnel discard all incoming data without processing it, so data moves in one direction only. It is a software control, not a physical diode. DataHub also supports hardware data diodes through TCP emulation.
Common applications
Documented one-way data flow, compliance-driven deployments, pairing with hardware diode products.
Cache data locally during outages and deliver it when the connection returns.
What DataHub supports
DataHub's store and forward works with database logging, cloud connections and external historians. When a destination goes offline, DataHub caches data locally; when the connection returns, it sends the stored values until the backlog is cleared, then resumes writing live values.
Common applications
Unreliable WAN, satellite or cellular links, remote sites, databases with maintenance windows.
Build browser-based HMI screens and dashboards from DataHub data.
What DataHub supports
DataHub WebView lets you create web-based operator displays and dashboards with live data from DataHub, served by DataHub's own web server (no IIS required).
Common applications
Operator displays, management dashboards, remote monitoring in a browser.
Monitor Windows system metrics and share them through DataHub.
What DataHub supports
System Monitor collects Windows performance and health metrics and makes them available as DataHub data points, so they can be bridged, logged or published alongside process data.
Common applications
Server health monitoring, SCADA workstation tracking, combined OT/IT monitoring.
Run custom scripts on data changes, schedules or events.
What DataHub supports
DataHub's built-in scripting engine runs custom logic to manipulate values, send notifications, perform calculations or trigger actions based on live data.
Common applications
Custom notifications, calculated tags, data normalization, event-driven integrations.
DataHub supports remote configuration and monitoring, so administrators can review connection status and change data flows on remote instances without being on site.
Common applications
Multi-site deployments, managed service providers, centralized OT management.
Six common industrial data problems, shown working with DataHub.
OPC DA to OPC UA Gateway demonstration
The device and its protocol stay the same behind the OPC DA server. DataHub changes the interface clients use: OPC DA in, OPC UA out.
Secure Remote Data Access demonstration
Tunnels are encrypted and password protected, and endpoints can be read-only or read-write. Which side opens the connection, and which ports are open, depends on your architecture.
Industrial MQTT Integration demonstration
Shown with an external broker. DataHub can also run its own broker.
Centralized Data Logging demonstration
Store & forward is included with DataHub database logging. Cache size is configurable; how much can be cached depends on your configuration.
Multi-Source Aggregation demonstration
Each source and destination is configured, and available interfaces depend on the enabled capabilities.
Real-Time Web Monitoring demonstration
WebView displays are built in DataHub and served by DataHub's web server.
The challenge
Legacy OPC DA servers can't serve modern OPC UA clients, and replacing them is costly.
How DataHub solves it
DataHub reads the OPC DA server as a client and exposes the same values through its OPC UA server.

Secure Tunneling
SSL/TLS-encrypted, password-protected tunnels between DataHub instances. Endpoints can be read-only or read-write, and reads and writes can use separate tunnels.
DMZ-Friendly Designs
Place DataHub instances in the OT network and the DMZ, so the DMZ instance relays data to IT with no direct path between IT and OT.
One-Way Data Transfer
Data Diode Mode (V11+) makes a tunnel discard all incoming data. It's a software control; DataHub also works with hardware data diodes, which enforce one-way flow physically.
Tunnels also detect network breaks with a configurable heartbeat (as fast as 50 ms) and recover automatically, and the security level required for a connection can be set per endpoint.
DataHub reads from OPC UA, OPC DA, MQTT, Modbus TCP, Excel and DDE sources at the same time. All data lands in DataHub's data set, where any configured destination (another OPC server, MQTT broker, historian, database or web display) can use it without knowing the original source.
Applications: Unified Namespace, multi-source SCADA feeds, data normalization before analytics.
MQTT & Sparkplug
Publish and subscribe with MQTT brokers, with Sparkplug support and an optional built-in broker.
DataHub's MQTT client publishes to and subscribes from compatible brokers, with Sparkplug support (V11 adds Sparkplug V3 and MQTT v5). DataHub can also run a broker internally.
DataHub tunnels mirror data between instances over SSL/TLS-encrypted, password-protected connections. Endpoints can be read-only or read-write, reads and writes can use separate tunnels, and connections are proxy and DMZ friendly. Data Diode Mode (V11+) enforces one-way movement in software and is not equivalent to a physical hardware diode. DataHub also supports deployments that use compatible hardware data diodes.
DataHub supports redundant data sources and redundant DataHub instances for high availability. Tunnels detect network breaks quickly and recover automatically, and store and forward caches data for databases, cloud connections and external historians until the connection returns.
Applications: Critical infrastructure, 24/7 operations, remote sites with unreliable WAN.

Enterprise integration · Namibia Breweries“
the fact that we could leverage the Cogent DataHub scripting engine, OPC interfaces, and file creation abilities in a tool we had already paid for in the prior project was a bonus for the cost of this project. By being able to set triggers for just about anything, we were able to be very creative in our solution. Each time we do something new with the Cogent DataHub, we are amazed at the flexibility that it provides us to bring things together and make them work.
Cogent DataHub is industrial data integration middleware that connects OPC UA, OPC Classic (DA and A&E), MQTT, Modbus TCP, SQL databases, historians and other interfaces in one unified data set. It is developed by Cogent Real-Time Systems and offered by Software Toolbox.
