OPC Data Logger End of Life

The OPC Data Logger product has reached its end-of-life (EOL) as of January 1, 2026. This means Software Toolbox has ceased all development on OPC Data Logger and officially retired the product. In practical terms:

  • No New Sales or Renewals: As of the EOL date, no new OPC Data Logger licenses or support agreement renewals are available. The product is no longer for sale, and you cannot extend support contracts beyond their current term.

  • Continued Operation: Your existing OPC Data Logger installations will continue to function as they do today. The software does not “expire” on the EOL date, you can keep using it on supported systems indefinitely. However, be aware that no further updates, bug fixes, or enhancements will be released. The technology OPC Data Logger was built on is outdated and no longer viable for modern requirements, so development has stopped, and we suggest finding alternatives with future support.

  • Support Commitments: Software Toolbox will honor existing support agreements for OPC Data Logger. If you have an active support contract, our team will continue to provide technical assistance through the duration of your agreement. However, since the product is retired, no new features or improvements can be provided, and any support is limited to workarounds or advice. Once your current support term ends, no further renewals can be purchased.

Replacement Solutions for OPC Data Logger

There are several powerful Software Toolbox-supported products that can seamlessly take over OPC Data Logger’s roles. Below, we outline recommended replacement tools based on common OPC Data Logger use cases, along with resources to help you get started.

  • Logging to CSV or Text Files: Many used OPC Data Logger to append real-time data to CSV files or text logs. The recommended replacement for this use case is OPC Router. OPC Router is a visual industrial integration tool that can log OPC data to text files (including CSV or even JSON format) without any custom programming. It offers a drag-and-drop workflow to route data from OPC servers to files on local disks, network shares, or cloud storage.

As an alternative, Cogent DataHub also supports text-based logging, though it typically requires writing a small script to define what and when to log to a file. DataHub’s strength is its flexibility and real-time data bridging capabilities; it can certainly log to text/CSV, but doing so involves its built-in scripting engine rather than a simple checkbox. If you prefer a code-free approach for file logging, OPC Router will be the easier path. DataHub is recommended if you already use it for other purposes or need its scripting power for highly customized logging.

  • Logging to SQL Databases: OPC Data Logger was often used to record data into SQL Server or other databases. Both Cogent DataHub and OPC Router are excellent replacements for database logging. Cogent DataHub includes a feature for ODBC database logging, allowing you to log values directly into any SQL database (SQL Server, MySQL, Oracle, etc.) securely and in real-time.

OPC Router, on the other hand, has a very broad support for databases through its plug-in architecture. It can connect to practically any common database system without coding, simply by configuration. Out-of-the-box, OPC Router supports Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, MySQL/MariaDB, PostgreSQL, SQLite, MongoDB, InfluxDB, SAP HANA, and more.

  • Reporting and Data Analysis: Some users employed OPC Data Logger as part of a larger reporting or analysis pipeline – for example, logging data that would later be used to generate reports on production, downtime, etc. For these needs, Dream Report is the recommended solution. Dream Report is an industrial reporting software that  includes its own data logging engine (called Logger Studio) for collecting data from OPC and other sources. It can log data into any standard SQL/ODBC database or its built-in historian, then use that data to produce rich, visual reports. Essentially, Dream Report can replace OPC Data Logger and provide an out-of-the-box reporting tool on top.

Each of these tools is actively developed and supported, ensuring long-term compatibility with evolving Windows OS, OPC UA standards, and security updates. They also offer free trial versions and tutorial videos to get you started quickly.
