Modernization Path

Modernize legacy TOP Server V5/V6 into a unified namespace with N3uron.

V5 and V6 predate modern OPC UA/TLS hardening, carry CISA-tracked CVEs, and are broken for remote OPC DA by Microsoft's non-disableable DCOM hardening. The winning play is rarely rip-and-replace — make N3uron your modern UNS/edge layer and, where it makes sense, bridge a current TOP Server via OPC UA for the exotic drivers. Select your version below to see your risk, then find your drivers in the migration matrix.

Lead with the hybrid path, not rip-and-replace

For most legacy V5/V6 sites, the winning play is to make N3uron the UNS/edge layer and connect it via OPC UA/DA to a current, supported TOP Server that keeps serving the exotic drivers. You modernize the architecture and adopt a unified namespace without ripping out proven connectivity.

Wave 1 — Direct

Direct migration

Modbus, Siemens S7 TCP, AB EtherNet/IP, OPC UA/DA, SQL and DNP3 map to native N3uron modules. Export TOP Server tags to CSV, reshape, and bulk-import — the cleanest, highest-volume path.

Wave 2 — Hybrid

N3uron + TOP Server via OPC UA

For Omron FINS, Mitsubishi MELSEC, GE SRTP and mixed fleets, keep a current TOP Server as the driver and let N3uron's OPC DA/UA Client ingest it into the UNS. You get the modern layer today.

Wave 3 — Stay

Stay on TOP Server

For DF1-serial, Siemens S5/S7-200, Modbus Plus/ASCII and EFM-heavy sites, the honest answer is a TOP Server V5/V6 → V7 security upgrade rather than N3uron.

Why V5/V6 is the reason to move now

DCOM hardening breaks it
Microsoft's KB5004442 hardening became non-disableable on March 14, 2023, breaking remote OPC DA classic for KEPServerEX 5.20.396 through 6.12. N3uron's outbound-only TLS design removes the DCOM problem entirely.
Tracked CVEs & EOL
V5/V6 carry CISA-tracked CVEs (CVE-2022-2825/2848, CVE-2023-3825/ICSA-23-208-02, CVE-2024-6098) and V4 is formally EOL. Old hosts run Windows Server 2008/2012 — both out of support.
Recommended action
Move the connectivity layer to N3uron for MQTT/Sparkplug, store-and-forward, embedded historian, and Linux/Docker/ARM deployment — the substrate for a unified namespace and Industrial AI.

Driver candidate matrix

Find your TOP Server drivers to see whether they migrate directly to a native N3uron module, belong in a hybrid architecture bridged via OPC UA, or are best kept on TOP Server. Filter by tier:

TOP Server driver family N3uron native equivalent Migration tier Key gaps / notes
Modbus TCP / RTU Modbus Client Direct No ASCII, Enron Modbus, or Modbus Plus; FC16 is not a true block write.
Siemens S7 TCP (S7-300/400/1200/1500) Siemens S7 Client Direct 1200/1500 need optimized-access OFF + PUT/GET; no S5, S7-200, LOGO, or MPI/Profibus.
Allen-Bradley ControlLogix / CompactLogix (Ethernet) EtherNet/IP Client Direct Module new in v1.22.0 (2025); EtherNet/IP only. Validate against real fleets.
AB MicroLogix / SLC 500 / PLC-5 EtherNet/IP + PCCC Hybrid No DF1 serial in N3uron; DF1/CSP devices stay on TOP Server.
OPC UA client / server OPC UA Client + Server Direct Full parity; the core of the modern stack.
OPC DA client OPC DA Client Direct Local + remote DCOM; connects to SWToolbox.TOPServer.V6 ProgIDs — the hybrid linchpin.
ODBC / SQL SQL Client Direct MS SQL, Oracle, MySQL, MariaDB, PostgreSQL.
DNP3 DNP3 Client + Server Direct Ethernet / serial; strong in utilities and oil & gas.
IEC 60870-5-104 / -102 IEC-104 / 102 Client + 104 Server Direct Strong in power / utilities.
BACnet/IP BACnet Client Direct Building automation.
SNMP SNMP Client Direct IT / infrastructure / data center.
IEC 61850 MMS Not native Hybrid Keep on TOP Server; bridge via OPC UA.
Omron (FINS), Mitsubishi (MELSEC) Not native Hybrid N3uron reaches Omron NJ/NX only via EtherNet/IP; keep TOP Server via OPC UA.
GE / Emerson SRTP & SNP Not native Hybrid TOP Server via OPC UA.
Yokogawa, Toyopuc, Fanuc Focas CNC Not native Hybrid TOP Server (or OmniServer / Focas) via OPC UA.
Oil & Gas EFM (ABB Totalflow, Fisher ROC/ROC+, BSAP) Not native Stay EFM export + proprietary protocols are a TOP Server strength; keep them there.
Custom ASCII / serial / DDE oddities Custom Client / OmniServer Hybrid OmniServer via OPC UA is often the cleaner answer.
Legacy AB DF1 serial, Siemens S5 / S7-200, Modbus Plus/ASCII Not native Stay Honest recommendation: version-upgrade TOP Server to V7.

Verified against docs.n3uron.com (V1.22). N3uron's EtherNet/IP module is new (v1.22.0, 2025) — validate against real ControlLogix/CompactLogix fleets before promising parity at scale. Kepware and N3uron tag addressing differ, so CSV import reduces but does not eliminate re-mapping effort, especially for Siemens DB and AB tag structures.

Advisory details reference Kepware's public EOL table, the CISA ICS record (ICSA-23-208-02), Microsoft's DCOM hardening guidance (CVE-2021-26414 / KB5004442), and associated CVEs for the KEPServerEX / TOP Server code base.

What you gain by moving to N3uron

N3uron replaces a monolithic Windows/DCOM OPC server with a modular, edge-native platform — the substrate for a unified namespace and Industrial AI.

Edge-native architecture

MQTT/Sparkplug B pub/sub, store-and-forward, embedded historian, and Linux/Docker/ARM deployment in under 1 GB of RAM — runs on repurposed IPCs or a Raspberry Pi.

No more DCOM

Outbound-only, TLS-encrypted, firewall-friendly connections eliminate the DCOM/tunneling workarounds legacy OPC DA now requires after the March 2023 hardening.

Unlimited-tag licensing

Module-based licensing with unlimited tags, devices and clients per license, sold as an annual subscription — no escalating tag-count costs.

Cybersecurity built in

Role-based access, certificates, an Audit Trail for 21 CFR Part 11 / NERC CIP, and a Data Diode module — with none of the unpatched V5/V6 CVE exposure.

UNS contextualization

Scripting, Derived Tags and Linked Tags build an ISA-95 model, central multi-node management, redundancy, and Web Vision visualization.

AI-ready foundation

N3uron's MCP Server exposes the contextualized model to AI agents, feeding chatUNS.ai, jonjon.ai and orangespark.ai — the move from connectivity to Industrial AI.

How the migration works

1

Export & reshape tags

Export TOP Server tags to CSV, reshape them, and bulk-import into N3uron. Direct-tier drivers migrate cleanly this way.

2

Run side-by-side

Stand up N3uron alongside TOP Server during cutover — no big-bang switchover, no data loss thanks to store-and-forward.

3

Bridge the exotics

For niche PLCs, keep TOP Server as the driver and have N3uron's OPC DA/UA Client ingest it. Front legacy OPC DA clients with N3uron's OPC UA Server.

4

Build the UNS + AI

Add Historian and publish to a unified namespace via MQTT/Sparkplug, then prove value with an AI/UNS use case such as a chatUNS.ai query.

Beyond connectivity

A unified namespace on N3uron is your on-ramp to Industrial AI.

Migrating a dormant connectivity seat is the entry point into the UNS and AI layers — the core of Software Toolbox's move from a transactional connectivity vendor to a full-stack Industrial AI company. The contextualized model N3uron builds feeds chatUNS.ai, jonjon.ai and orangespark.ai, and N3uron's MCP Server exposes it directly to AI agents.
