Unsolicited communications are common with devices such as weigh scales and barcode scanners, where a data value is passed automatically to OmniServer as soon as a weight or barcode has been recorded.

Yes. Other than physical limits mentioned in the question about limits to the number of devices, there is no limit to the different types of devices to which you may connect and communicate at any one time with OmniServer.  For example, you could easily connect to a weigh scale on a serial link, barcode scanner over USB, and a temperature sensor over Ethernet all at the same time from the same OmniServer.
