Frequently Asked Connectivity Questions

  • Is there a limit to the number of devices?

OmniServer can support all the above mentioned devices simultaneously, so there is never a problem with mixing or matching devices. Up to a combination of 2048 devices, topics, clients (Server/Professional Editions) and protocols can run at one time (although you are limited by the resources available on the computer with respect to performance).

  • What does unsolicited mean?

Unsolicited connections, also referred to sometimes as "slave" connections, are a type of device communication where the device sends data as it is available without requiring a command from the host or "master" (in this case, OmniServer).

Unsolicited communications are common with devices such as weigh scales and barcode scanners, where a data value is passed automatically to OmniServer as soon as a weight or barcode has been recorded.

  • Can I talk to more than one type of device at a time?
Yes. Other than physical limits mentioned in the question about limits to the number of devices, there is no limit to the different types of devices to which you may connect and communicate at any one time with OmniServer.  For example, you could easily connect to a weigh scale on a serial link, barcode scanner over USB, and a temperature sensor over Ethernet all at the same time from the same OmniServer.
  • What does solicited mean?
Solicited connections are a type of device communication where the host (i.e. OmniServer) must send a command or request to the device or system in order to do something or receive a response.

Get Started Now

The demo is the full product once licensed. Once a client application connects to the OmniServer, the OmniServer runtime will operate for 2 hours at a time. At the end of the 2 hour demo period, the demo timer must be reset by restarting the OmniServer runtime.
